ELMER DEWAYNE WALLS '60 died June 24, 2002, in Brainerd, Minn. He was a
manager at Potlatch Corp., a paper manufacturer, for 39 years and a
towering figure in Minnesota amateur ice hockey. Active as a coach and
referee, he also served four terms as president of Minnesota Hockey,
overseeing a growth spurt in its membership; he initiated a
coach-screening program utilizing background checks and a corporate
marketing campaign that became a model for youth hockey organizations
nationwide. He was also Minnkota district director for USA Hockey. He
leaves his wife, Mary (Makidon), two daughters, Becky Butcher and Debbie
Singer, two sons, Robin and Todd, and a brother, Dale.
