Joseph Peter Pellegrino

Joseph Peter Pellegrino, of Boston, Osterville and Mill Reef, Antigua, West Indies died in Andover, Saturday, November 19th, after a long illness.

Raised in Andover, Massachusetts, Mr. Pellegrino graduated from Phillips Andover Academy and Harvard College. After college, Mr. Pellegrino served in the United States Marine Corps, rising to the rank of Captain before his honorable discharge in 1968. After his military service, he joined his family's business, the Prince Company of Lowell, Massachusetts. He became President and Chief Executive Officer in 1973 and remained in that capacity until the company's sale to The Borden Company in 1987. He served on several corporate boards, including The Fiduciary Trust Company of Boston.

A lifelong philanthropist, Mr. Pellegrino had an earnest commitment to service. As a loyal alumnus of Harvard, he served as Chairman of the 25th Reunion Class of 1960, on the Dean's Council of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, as a John Harvard Fellow, and as a member of the 350th Anniversary Commission. The Joseph Pellegrino University Professor is named in his honor.

An admirer of the arts, he was a former Treasurer of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and an Honorary Life Trustee. Ever the student of history, Mr. Pellegrino and his wife, Anne, were co-founders of The Friends of the Collection at George Washington's Mount Vernon. Devoted to his faith, Mr. Pellegrino helped to establish The Inner City Scholarship Fund and was a member of The Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

Married in 1960, Mr. Pellegrino was the beloved husband of Anne Pellegrino. He was the devoted father of Carla Cabot of Chestnut Hill; Joseph, Jr. and his wife, Roberta, of Boston; and Stephen and his wife, Allison, of Westwood. He was also the loving grandfather of Carlton, Jr., Elisabeth and Anne Cabot, as well as Allegra, Serena, Stephen, Jr., Eleanor and Alexandra Pellegrino.
