EDWARD MICHAEL MURRAY '60 died October 18, 2000, in New York City. He hadbeen a professor of music theory at Cornell University and conductor of the Cornell SymphonyOrchestra since 1975. He was also a talented pianist in a variety of idioms, including jazz. Hewas director of the Cornell Music Nova contemporary music series, the longtime musicaldirector for the Ithaca Opera Association, and a regular performer with the Syracuse Society forNew Music. A champion of new musical works, he conducted many premieres and served asguest conductor with many groups, including the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and theDaCapo Chamber Players. His work can be heard on the Columbia, Nonesuch, and Spectrumlabels. When not making or teaching music, he loved looking at architecture. He leaves his wife,Myra Malkin, and a daughter, Nadya.
