The William J. Perry Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies selected Richard L. Millett of Marine, Illinois, a Senior Fellow at the Dante B. Fascell North-South Center (established by a 1991 Act of Congress "to promote better relations between the United States and the nations of Latin America and the Caribbean and Canada through cooperative study, training, and research"), former Oppenheimer Chair of Modern Warfighting Strategy at the U.S. Marine Corps University and Professor Emeritus of History at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, to receive the 2014 William J. Perry Award for Excellence in Security and Defense Education.

Previous recipients include former Mexican President Felipe Calderon, U.S. General John Galvin and former Columbian President Alvaro Uribe Velez. Dr. Millett is being recognized especially for his significant contributions in the fields of security and defense education that reflect the Center’s mission: the promotion of education, research, outreach, and knowledge sharing in defense and security issues in the Western Hemisphere that lead to enhancing professional security and defense capacity, advancing a cooperative international security environment, fostering effective civil-military relations, and adhering to the Perry Center’s core value.

The award was presented in Washington, D.C. in September, 2014.
