Donald Joseph MacMillan passed away August 18, 2013, from complications with his brave battle against cancer. Don was the husband of Mary (Mahon) and the son of the late Donald and Frances MacMillan.
Don was born in Boston and raised in Newton, MA. Don graduated from St. Sebastian's Country Day School in 1956 and Harvard University in 1961. He served on active duty in the United States Navy from 1961-1964. After his honorable discharge from the Navy he joined his father in the family business, Calvert's Inc. of Needham, MA. The employees of Calvert's were a second family to him. Don enjoyed the jokes and friendships he gathered on buying trips to New York and the British Isles.
Don served as a past President of the Newton-Needham Chamber of Commerce and on the Board of the Mutual Bank for Savings as well as the Francis Ouimet Society.
Don was passionate about his hobbies and the people he enjoyed them with. Don was an avid golfer and member of the Oyster Harbors Club, He was a former member of the Brae Burn and Charles River Country Clubs, winning many tournaments over the years. Don enjoyed duck hunting on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, James Bay, Ontario and Quebec. Don was former Regional Vice President of Ducks Unlimited and a member of the Upland Game Club in Norfolk, Ma where he could be seen lighting the fireplace early on a chilly morning, often times with one of his children in tow, for a few hours of pheasant hunting. His most recent passion was the game of bridge. Don became a silver life master in short order and Director and partner of the Upper Cape Bridge club. Don played his last game of bridge the day before he died.
Above all, he cherished his family. He was fortunate to celebrate fifty years of marriage to his wife Mickey renewing their wedding vows at the Parish of Christ the King and celebrating at the Daniel Webster Inn with their five children, their spouses, and thirteen grandchildren December 29, 2012.
He is survived by his wife Mickey and five children, Maura and her husband Ted Wayman of Wellesley, MA Jennifer and her husband Mark McCartin of Osterville, MA Sheila and her husband David Cole of Falmouth, MA, Amy Santenello of Stowe, VT, and Donald and his wife Kesley MacMillan of Farmington, CT. He leaves a legacy of thirteen grandchildren. Jack, Jane, and Quinn Wayman, Maggie, Clare, and Michael McCartin, Matthew and Kate Cole, Ava and Maxwell Santenello, Jacob, Emily, and Ronan MacMillan. He is also survived by his brother-in-law John Higgins of Andover, and the nine children of his beloved pre-deceased sister Nancy MacMillan Higgins.
