Henry Beardsell Leonard, of Hudson, Ohio, died on May 26, 2007 at home with his family. Mr. Leonard grew up in Swampscott and later enjoyed a home in Marblehead.
He is survived by his wife Dina Kauders Leonard; son Nathaniel and wife Elizabeth Leonard of Hudson; daughter Emily and husband Matthew Kite of Cincinnati, Ohio; and five granddaughters: Emma and Sarah Leonard and Natalie, Claire and Eliza Kite. Mr. Leonard also leaves brother Laurence B. Leonard Jr. of Swampscott and sister Barbara of Marblehead and many Marblehead area friends.
Mr. Leonard graduated from The Taft School and Harvard College, and earned an MA from University of California at Berkely and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University. He taught Immigration and Business History and chaired the History Department at Kent State University.
Mr. Leonard�s pleasures included walking his dog, cooking, gardening, singing in the church choir, recording talking books, snooping at antique shows, attending concerts, traveling to foreign places and investigating the arts and culture of all sorts. His New England background was reflected in his Ohio participation in many preservation activities. He maintained interest and membership in such local organizations as the Eastern Yacht Club, Peabody Essex Museum and the Lee Mansion.
A memorial service was held on June 1, 2007 at the Congregational Church in Hudson, Ohio. At a future date, a service will be conducted at Harmony Grove in Salem.
