RICHARD R. FOGARTY, a longtime resident of Darien, CT, died Friday, July 9, 2004 at Stamford Hospital. He died of cancer, according to his family.
Born March 15, 1938 in Cambridge, MA, he was the son of the late Edward F. and Mildred M. Fogarty. He was a graduate of Melrose, MA High School, Rivers County Day School and Harvard College. He served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
During his career, he became a leader in the beverage industry after working in various management positions with Schaefer Beer, McKesson-Robins and Labatt-U.S.A., where he served as President and C.E.O. for several years. In 1994, 1995 and 1996, he was recognized by Irish America Magazine as one of the Top 100 Irish-American Business Leaders in the United States.
Upon his retirement in 1996, he was very active in community affairs and served as a member of Norwalk Grassroots Tennis Board of Directors, the Board of Directors of Odyssey in New York City, the Board of Advisors of Fairfield University Graduate School of Business and as Head Coach of the successful Darien High School Junior Varsity Tennis Team. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Thomas More Church in Darien and a member of both the Harvard Club of New York City and the Woodway Country Club in Darien.
Mr. Fogarty particularly enjoyed working with young people and helping them to achieve their academic and athletic potential. He had a special affection for Ireland and held dual citizenship in the U.S.A. and Ireland. He, and his family, also loved their Narragansett, RI summer home. Mr. Fogarty was an outstanding tennis and paddle tennis player, and in 2003, won the National 65 & Over Paddle Tennis Doubles Championship with his partner, Roy Anderson of Darien. He was a longtime suffering fan of the Boston Red Sox.
Mr. Fogarty is survived by his wife of 41 years, Kathleen; his four children, Richard of Miami, FL; Kathleen Selvaggi of New Canaan, CT; Suzanne of New York City; Justine Appicelli of New York City; his three grandchildren, Maureen, Meghan and Maeve Selvaggi of New Canaan, CT; and his brother, Edward of Darien, CT.
